2010 SPIRIT OF CU AWARD WINNER DR. JOHN KARAJANIS

Dr John Karajanis is the winner of this year's Spirit of the Credit Union Award. John joined the Credit Union, when he was a science teacher, in 1958.

He is an avid supporter of the credit union and its philosophy of "helping people to help themselves." As a leader in the West Haven school system and as a member of the CU Board, John is a persistent yet patient statesman.

John's habits of discipline, self-sacrifice and duty are evident in his choices when advocating for the credit union, its staff and our members.

John and his immediate family have been blessed by achieving so many dreams…optimistic dreams because of the faith they have in the people of West Haven.

City of West Haven Awards Greater West Haven Federal Credit Union As Business of the Month

City of West Haven Mayor John Picard recently awarded the Greater West Haven Federal Credit Union with the West Haven Pride Award “Business of the Month” for it’s contribution to the city of West Haven as an outstanding community and corporate partner.  The non-profit financial institution, which has operated at 502 Main Street in West Haven since 1974, underwent major renovations which transformed the building into a first rate, state of the art facility.  Changes to the interior and exterior of the building made it more environmentally friendly and modern.

The Greater West Haven Federal Credit Union is celebrating it’s 70th anniversary this year.  Founded in 1938 by five West Haven Teachers, the credit union now offers membership exclusively to those who live, work, worship or volunteer in West Haven.  “For all the decades since our inception, our vision has remained the same.  Through our participation in the Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, the West Haven Housing Authority and the Business Association, our goal has been to serve the community and make West Haven an even greater place to live.” stated Maryanne Cordone-Rapacciuolo, CEO.

The Greater West Haven Federal Credit Union is very different from a bank.  When you enter the building, there is a waiting room with chairs, magazines, a TV and usually a free raffle for all members with great prizes.  When you conduct your financial business you are seated comfortably at a desk with a credit union employee, in total privacy.  Service is prompt and friendly and there is ample and convenient parking.  The credit union may not have a branch on every corner, but they know everyone’s names.  And in this age of mergers and acquisitions, that is a rarity.
