Utilizing one school room at the former West Haven High School on Main Street in West Haven, the first Credit Union manager, Germain Gabriel chartered the West Haven Teachers Federal Credit Union on October 11, 1938 to serve employees of the West Haven Board of Education and family members who lived with them.

In 1947, Alfred Maiorano and his wife, Mary, managed the Credit Union from a home office in West Haven on Winslow Drive, and later Martin Lane in Orange. The Credit Union charter was amended in 1964 to include employees of New Haven College, now known as the University of New Haven, and their families.

In 1978, the Credit Union bought the property and building located at 502 Main Street, across from the State Armory Building in West Haven, where it remains today. In 1982 the Credit Union charter was again changed to include all who lived or worked in the city of West Haven, and their family members related by blood or marriage.

In 1987, following the retirement of Alfred Maiorano, 13-year employee, Maryanne Cordone, was appointed by the Board of Directors to serve as manager of the Credit Union.

In 2000, the Credit Union changed it’s name to better reflect the group of members it served, hence the name, Greater West Haven Federal Credit Union.

In 2003 our charter was further changed to include those who worship, volunteer or attend school in West Haven, West Haven clubs and organizations, Members clubs and organizations, and people living in a members household.

In 2005-06, extensive remodeling to the interior and exterior of the Credit Union building was completed transforming the "Financial Home You Own" into an upscale and efficient property.

Today the Credit Union serves many employee groups in our fair city; some as small as one employee. Our credit union family spans four generations of people helping people.
